ARCH 655 - PROJECT 2 - FINAL PROJECT

  • Structure - Cayan Tower / Infinity Tower , Dubai

  • Architects - SOM | Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

  • Project Year - 2013

Project 2 has 3 components:
1. Create the 3D form
2. Use Lady bug to do the Solar Analysis
3. Use Genetic Algorithm - Galapagos to optimize the rotation of building for maximizing the daylight on facade
Component 1:
Use polygon to create the Square as a basic starting geometry.
Plug the polygon into Move, for getting the desired height and no. of floors
To rotate the building, I have used animation with Graph Mapper
This animation and moved floors is connected to Rotate tab. It gives us the twisted floors.
We cover these profiles by using Loft. The form is complete with this process.
Component 2:
Lady bug plugin is used for solar analysis. We need to connect EPW file of the location where we place our building. I have placed it in Houston as default location. This information is visible in the connected panel.
The sun path around this building can be viewed after we turn the sunPath tab on.
Vector display helps us understand the direction of sunrays and exact sun positions at specific time and month can be viewed by using Tag as shown.
To understand which facade gets the maximum sunlight, I am using 2 colors - Blue and White. This has been plugged into Sunlight Analysis as shown.
We see that the South Facade receives most Sunlight as it is Dark Blue in color and the adjacent facade starts to show faded blue due to less direct sunlight.
North Facade is almost White showing the least direct sunlight. With this we complete the solar analysis.
Component 3:
We now use the Genetic Algorithm Galapagos to optimize the rotation of the facade to get the maximum area for direct sunlight. The Genome is connected to animation to control the rotation.
The fitness is connected to area, to get the maximized result.
Solver provides us with multiple options until we find the best possible solution.
